Australian Secret Intelligence Service
The foreign intelligence agency of Australia, publicly confirmed in 1977
Overview
ASIS was formed in 1952 to collect foreign intelligence for Canberra and remained officially unacknowledged until the Hope Royal Commission of 1977, triggered in part by the 1975 Sheraton Hotel training incident. The commission set its charter and prohibitions, later refined by the ASIS Act of 2001. The service focuses on Australia's region from Southeast Asia to the Pacific and operates within the Five Eyes partnership. Parliamentary oversight follows the modern Australian committee model. Its sister service ASIO handles domestic security, separating foreign collection from home counterintelligence.
