DGSE
The French foreign intelligence service since 1982
Overview
The Direction Generale de la Securite Exterieure succeeded the SDECE in 1982 and collects foreign intelligence from the Boulevard Mortier in Paris, nicknamed the swimming pool for its neighbor. It runs human intelligence and special operations, with African networks a traditional strength since decolonization. Modern priorities include counterterrorism in the Sahel and hostage recovery, and its commando service has conducted celebrated rescue flights. Domestic counterintelligence belongs to the parallel DGSI, separated after the 2015 Paris attacks review. Its recruits train at a dedicated center and deploy under diplomatic or commercial cover.
