Eli Cohen
The Israeli agent who infiltrated the Syrian ruling elite in the 1960s
Overview
Eli Cohen, an Egyptian-born Israeli, operated in Damascus from 1961 to 1965 under the identity of a Syrian businessman, rising so close to power that his name circulated for government posts. He toured the Golan Heights with officers, sending home defensive positions later targeted in 1967. Caught in 1965 with the help of Soviet detection equipment, he was publicly hanged in Damascus in May 1965. Syria has never returned his remains, and his operation is studied as a masterpiece of long cover illegals work.
