Mossad
The foreign intelligence service of Israel, famous for capture and rescue operations
Overview
Mossad was established in 1949 as the Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations and reports directly to the Prime Minister. It combines human intelligence with direct action, and its landmark operations include the 1960 capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, the Wrath of God campaign after the 1972 Munich massacre, and support for the 1976 Entebbe rescue. Operation Diamond in 1966 brought an Iraqi MiG-21 fighter to Israel for study. Its motto quotes the biblical proverb that where there is no counsel, the people fall.
