Operation Entebbe
The 1976 long range rescue of hostages at Entebbe airport in Uganda
Overview
Operation Entebbe freed more than a hundred hostages held by hijackers at Entebbe airport in July 1976 after an Air France flight was diverted with the connivance of Idi Amin. Israeli commandos flew some 4,000 kilometers, stormed the terminal in minutes, and destroyed Ugandan fighter jets on the ground. Commander Yonatan Netanyahu was killed in the assault. The raid became the textbook case study in long range hostage rescue. Israeli transport crews carried a medical team and a Mercedes rigged to mimic the motorcade of Amin.
